From EverQuest2.com:

Station Access has a new name, lower fees and more plan options!

Why pick just one of our amazing games to play when you can get access to an exciting line-up of all of our most popular titles for one low price? We’ve listened to your feedback and we are happy to announce the launch of the SOE All Access game pass!

Formerly called Station Access, SOE All Access will allow you access to play many of our most popular games including: DC Universe™ Online (PC version), EverQuest® (PC and Mac versions), EverQuest II, EverQuest II Extended – Gold Membership,  EverQuest Online Adventures™ (PlayStation® 2), Pirates of the Burning Sea® – Captain’s Club Membership, PlanetSide®, Star Wars Galaxies™, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes®, Free Realms® (PC and Mac versions) Membership, and Star Wars®: Clone Wars Adventures™ (PC and Mac versions) Jedi Membership.

EQ2 ZAM were paying attention during SOE’s live webcast from the E3 show floor and among other things picked up the news that the multi-game Station Access accounts will see a price cut to $19.99. Not only does Station Access grant 12 rather than the 7 character slots of a normal account (although additional character slots can be purchased for either), but it also allows players to access other games like EverQuest 1, Vanguard, Star Wars Galaxies, Pirates of the Burning Sea, etc.

From EQ2 ZAM:

Sony Online Entertainment just confirmed during their live E3 stream that Station Access will soon be dropping to $19.99 per month from the current price of $29.99 per month. That means you can get access to all of SOE’s games for a little more than the price of one game subscription!

One aspect of the EverQuest 2 Live vs. EverQuest 2 Extended (Free-to-Play) debate has been how Station Access fits into the picture. Many Station Access players are using the account not to play multiple SOE games, but for the extra 5 character slots.

With the “EQ2 Subscription Perks” announced by SmokeJumper for monthly, quarterly, and yearly subscriptions, designed to offset and contrast against the EQ2 Extended servers, Station Access players have been feeling left out.

In a thread entitled “Station Access Accounts – No Multi-Month, No Extras, No Nothing“, SmokeJumper has hinted at some possible changes going forward.

Actually, (and I can’t commit to things because this stuff is under the control of Marketing…not Dev), the changes I proposed were mostly to the multi-month memberships, not to the SA packages specifically.

If you’re signing up for SA because you like to play multiple games, then it’s already a fantastic deal. However, if you’re signing up for SA just because you like having more character slots, then its obvious why you’re bummed about not getting to take advantage of the multi-month memberships. So my proposal was intended as a solution for folks that aren’t using SA for multiple games, but are only using it for extra character slots.

That might make my proposal obvious, but I’ll wait and see if marketing runs with the idea before rolling it out any further here. No guarantees…just working it from my side also to see if I can help make changes.

Players on standard EQ2 accounts with more than 7 characters in a region, or players on Station Access accounts with more than 12 characters in a region were locked out of accessing these “hidden” characters with a change in Game Update 57. Although intended to close an exploit, the primary motivation for this change has been to protect the monetization of character slots, which are for sale on EQ2 Extended servers.

Note: This change has been rolled back as of Tuesday, August 24th, to allow players to “get their house in order”. On Tuesday, August 31st, players who have more characters than are allowed by their account type will only have the option of deleting characters to access “hidden” characters. The /camp command will not load any character not visible on the character select screen, and changes to the character list INI file will be ignored.

If you have no more than 7 EQ2 characters on your EQ2 account, or no more than 12 EQ2 characters on your Station Account, you do not need to do anything.

This notice appeared on Friday, but I held it til today to coincide with the official start of the 1 week grace period.

From SmokeJumper:

We’ve been getting a lot of calls about the character slot change, so to try to let everyone know what we’re doing all at once, here’s an announcement about the subject.

First of all, there were lots of accounts out there that had extra character slots beyond the limits of their current subscription.

We made a recent change that fixed that issue and brought the limits back to where they were supposed to be.

However, we did that change without prewarning you folks…which was an error on our part.

So we’re going to do a one-week rollback on that change to allow you to shuffle stuff around on your characters and ensure that the characters you want are left in your remaining slots before we reimplement the change.

On Tuesday, August 24th, we’ll roll back the change. At that time, you’ll be able to access all your characters, regardless of our account slot limitations.

For one week (7 days) you can freely exchange stuff back and forth between your characters.

Then on Tuesday, August 31st, we’ll reimplement the fix and accounts will be restricted to their proper number of character slots.

BEFORE AUGUST 31st, just make sure that the last characters you log into the game are the ones that you want to keep. Then, when we reimplement the fix, you’ll be left with your most recently-logged characters, and you’ll be good to go.

We apologize for the inconvience we created by not pre-announcing this change. But this should let you do all the shuffling you need to do before the fix goes back in.

From Bunji, member of the crack EQ2 QA department:

This should be working now. You may need to restart your client.

From Shareana:

If you are still not able to see all 12 characters slots and pay for Station Access, please be sure that you have sent in a ticket via /petition or the Knowledge Base.

So the aftermath of our brouhaha yesterday about players who have been (admittedly) taking advantage of having more than 7 characters on an EQ2 account (or more than 12 characters on a Station Access account) has been rather swift and conciliatory.

The good news from SmokeJumper:

We’ve talked it over further and there is new news on this front:

  1. We’re going to rollback this feature next Tuesday (8/24). You’ll be able to access all your characters at that time.
  2. You’ll have seven days to get onto your account and pull items off any characters you desire if you want to shuffle stuff around.
  3. On Tuesday (8/31), we’ll turn the feature back on and all accounts will be limited to the proper number of character slots.

If you ensure that the characters you want to keep are the last ones you have logged in before 8/31, then those are the ones that will be available when the feature is re-implemented.

Again, the feature rollback will be in this coming Tuesday’s hotfix (8/24) and you’ll have access to all your characters again starting on that day until the following Tuesday (8/31).

Asked why this wasn’t responded to sooner, or why such a grace period was not offered earlier:

Well…to be honest, I admit we made a mistake here. In hind sight, it’s kind of a “no duh” thing to do. Our only excuse is that we’ve been very busy, yet that’s a pretty lame excuse. But we’re making good as rapidly as possible.

After a lot of questions and a lot of waiting, we finally get an answer on what the “perks” will be for the EQ2 Live Subscription servers.  This thread on the official forums outlines the perks that you get for a multi-month subscription.

Here is the new subscription registration page for the Live servers:

Perks

The perks will be one per account (not character).  The text under bonus value will be updated, however this is how it is showing on the live site at the moment.

A few screen shots of the items you are able to get for the 12 month subscription:

Steed of the Blazing Sun

Steed

Cloak of the Storm

Cloak

Nizaran Assassin Armor Crate

Armor

Naturally the question of weather or not these “perks” would be available to current and long time Station Access subscribers came up.

Per Amnerys:

I believe this should be for all subs.

As far as I know, those who have current multi-month subs already, you will also get the perks. In fact, I hear they’re scheduled to get added retroactively to accounts tomorrow. If you currently have a 3-month sub, you’ll automatically get the new 3-month perks, and same across the board 6 and 12 months.

And if I understand correctly, every time you re-sub for the multi-month, you’ll get those rewards again. However I’m not sure that you get them at the moment you sub…it might be as your card is billed. I’ll get clarification on that. [Edited to add: I think it cycles every 24 hours, so you should get your items within 24 hours of subbing.]

As for Station Access, unfortunately not available at this time. It sounds like we’re looking into a way to have a multi-month SA account, but it’s probably a year out or so. I don’t think it’s totally fair to say you get squat, but we can agree to disagree. SA accounts do automatically get Gold membership on EQ2X, as well as your regular monthly things that come with SA.

(I need 3 more of me today to try and answer all these questions. Phew!)

Many were upset about Station Aash not being included in the perks of a live subscription and with the news that multi-month Station Access was over a year out.   Many people feel that even though they do get more character slots, in the end they are paying almost double of the normal subscription.

After several posts, SmokeJumper jumped in and stated:

The guy I need to talk to about SA perks is not in the office today or tomorrow. I’ll speak with him early next week and then come back to let you know what gets decided.

NOTE: I’m not promising anything. This is not a dev team decision. But we’ve discussed it on the dev team and you have some good points in this thread. We’ll see. More next week.

He also states in that thread:

The initial reference (website) is incorrect and needs to be changed. They (the perks) are granted once per account, not per character.

The cloak and armor don’t have stats. The Steed does have regular mount-ish stats, but is slightly faster than the current marketplace mounts (similar to BG mount speeds) and has a bonus for potency.

It was confirmed that those who have an existing multi-month subscription will be gaining the “perks” retroactively. Time will tell on whether Station Access will have the same benefits or not, or if these perks will be enough incentive to come to the Live servers over the Extended servers.

We may not have heard the last word for players with extra or “hidden” characters on their EQ2 accounts. From Rothgar:

Unfortunately this is not an easy fix, as I think the characters are sorted by code based on some pre-defined criteria.

I’ve reviewed the code and may have a potential solution but before I provide more details I’ll need to confirm this with Customer Service and make sure its something we can do.

We’ll keep you apprised. Although, most of you know, I’m on European time zone now, so most of the big news happens while I’m asleep. :(

UPDATE:

SmokeJumper has added these comments:

We’re discussing this internally and should have something to share with you either later today or tomorrow.

Just a heads-up to let you know this is not being ignored.

UPDATE: We have renamed this article, as there has been conciliatory action taken on this issue.

So if you read our article today about EQ2 customers who have had more than 7 characters on their EQ2 accounts who woke up to found that additional “hidden” characters are inaccessible, you probably have little sympathy for these players.

However, this is a customer-oriented business, and given such a situation, advanced warning so players can “get their house in order” is always the recommended course of action. Handled properly, some players would upgrade to Station Access again (maybe for a month or two to sort things out), most players would shuffle things around and delete characters to come “into compliance”, and a small handful of players would ragequit.

However SOE is trying something different it seems. Tough love? Too bad, so sad? We’re not clear. But here’s your answer ladies and gentlemen…

Posted on the EQ2 Forums by Rothgar:

I apologize that this change didn’t make it into the update notes. It was not our intention to try to hide it. Obviously this would have been discovered within about 5 minutes of the update hitting live servers. We’ve already had the internal discussion of making sure that our changes are hitting the update notes to try to keep this type of thing from happening again in the future. Every update there are things that we miss in the update notes and we know we need to improve that.

We’ve known about this issue for as long as its been in the game and it was always something we saw as needing to be fixed. We never considered it a bannable exploit, but it was definitely something that was not intended. With the addition of the Extended service, we wanted to limit character slots for free accounts to provide another reason to encourage people to subscribe. This bug would have had a bigger impact in that environment, so it became a priority to fix it.

Unfortunately we have no plans to undo this fix as it was definitely something that should have been fixed a long time ago. The fact that you’ve been able to make use of those additional slots for so long shouldn’t take away from the fact that it was a bug.

It may be little consolation, but we’ve resurrected the discussion of selling additional character slots to give you more options. There have always been some hurdles with this which is why you haven’t already seen it. As soon as we have more information on this topic, we’ll let you know.

Again, I hope you’ll accept our apology for not giving more warning on this change.

Greg “Rothgar” Spence is one of the most motivated, determined, just plain awesome developers I’ve ever had the pleasure to talk to. He genuinely cares about customer experience and how changes are perceived by the players. So it is gut-wrenching to watch him be forced to implement more and more customer-hostile changes such as this one. I know I would personally be at the end of my rope at this point. Folks, the job market cannot bounce back fast enough!

For years, players have been asking for additional character slots, either for free, or as an optional one-time purchase.

Seven vs. Twelve

An EQ2 monthly subscription runs approximately $14-15 a month depending on your choice to pre-pay 3, 6, or 12 months in advance, or stick to month-to-month payments. Despite the introduction of new races, and a new expansion each year, currently, EQ2 subscribers have access to 7 character slots.

So far, the only option offered to increase the number of character slots has been to buy Station Access.  This $29.95/mo package was originally intended as a way to provide access to SOE’s entire stable of online games (EQ1, EQ2, SWG, etc.). But over the years, this deal has been sweetened with the addition of more character slots. An EQ2 player with Station Access receives 12 character slots.

It’s worth noting that those are 7 and 12 slots per region. Players can start 7 characters on US, EU, and Test servers, making for a total of 21 characters in all if you include all 3 regions.

What happens when you downgrade, and today’s changes after the jump…

What happens when you downgrade?

What hasn’t been clear is what happens when a player initially subscribes to Station Access, creates more than 7 characters, and then at some point in the future downgrades their account to an EQ2 standard account.

Who decides which 7 characters remain accessible?

How do you tell the game which 7 character slots you want to keep active?

Can any of the other characters be accessed?

Station Access FAQ

Here’s what the Station Access FAQ has to say on the subject:

What happens to my additional character slots for EverQuest, EverQuest II and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes if my Station Access subscription is cancelled or terminated?

You will only have access to your additional character slots while you are an active Station Access subscriber. If you cancel your Station Access subscription or it is cancelled or terminated, but you continue with your individual game subscription, you will only retain access to the standard number of characters for that game.

Not exactly clear.

Hidden Characters

The point of this article is not to hang anyone at SOE out to dry. In the past, players have been able to switch to hidden characters, that is, characters they don’t have access to because they are on a standard EQ2 account, by typing /camp charactername. This advice came from well-meaning SOE support based on the information available to them at the time.

This was the policy at the time, I’m guessing because there just wasn’t a better way for a player to choose which 7 characters they want to use, to the exclusion of all others.

Game Update 57 Change

With Game Update 57 comes a new error message and behavior. If you have more characters than you should, if you try to access the “hidden” characters, you are presented with an error message indicating that you have too many characters. There is no way to shuffle your characters around and choose which 7 you want to use.

I think we can all agree that A player should not be able to pay $15/month and have all the character slots they want.

However throwing the switch and locking out players from accessing all but the 7 most recently accessed characters without any warning or announcement is probably not the best way to keep some of your most loyal customers to stick around, or to get them to pay more money.

I’ve read this controversial thread and players have been called shoplifters, scofflaws, thieves, and worse, despite the fact that some of these players have paid upwards of $500 over 3 years just to maintain 5 extra character slots. Is a character slot really worth $100? At one time, Station Access was $20 per month. Now it’s $30.

I heard rumblings at Fan Faire that the Station Access may receive some attention, either additional benefits or some other change. But this is the kind of thing that should be discussed out in the open, with transparency about what SOE is wanting to accomplish. This is the type of change that should have been announced and discussed, and possibly with the introduction of a reasonably affordable one-time fee or monthly fee to buy additional character slots. It also doesn’t help that some players were unable to locate the Station Access plan within the revamped EQ2 Subscription chooser screens.

MythBusting…

If you have 7 characters, then with your EQ2 account you still have access to those 7 slots today.

If you have 12 characters and have Station Access, then you still have access to those 12 slots.

If you have more than 7 characters, but are on a standard EQ2 account, then for the time being, if you try to /camp to a character not currently on the Character Select screen (the last 7 actively used characters), or even if you try to edit the appropriate INI settings file, you will not be able to access those other characters until you upgrade to a Station Access account. If you try, you will be presented with an error message “You have too many characters.”
