From Zam…

EQII’s annual holiday event starts after tomorrow’s downtime.

The season of giving and cheer will start on Tuesday, December 6, after the downtime that launches the Age of Discovery expansion. Will you create a new Beastlord before running to seeSanta Glug, who has added seven new presents to his bag this year?

This year Frostfell introduces a new quest: Frostfell Decoration Committee, which is a bit like a crafting mission as you help the Frostfoot goblins decorate Permafrost.  The classic Grab ‘n’ Tag game has been retired, and players can play the new Frostfell Candy Grab in Antonica and Commonlands for fun prizes and Frozen Tokens of E’ci!

There are also three new recipe books for the craft-a-holics which include such items as the Candy-Stripped Sword Of Doom, a Holiday Candy Bowl, and a variety of floating Fairy Lights!

ZAM is pleased to again offer our updated Frostfell Quest Tracker. Print it out and chart up to 15 of your characters’ progress! Happy Frostfell!

To celebrate the release of Age of Discovery, lets look back on Sony’s past product reviewed by The Onion News Network! Is Age of Discovery another stupid piece of sh*t that doesn’t f*ucking work? You decide! I would love to hear your responses in the comments section below!

If you follow EQ2 devs on Twitter, this is likely old news to you, but Kyle “Kander” Kyle Vallée has posed some questions:

What #EQII zone would you love to see revamped into new heroic content ?

Note, this would be an alternate version perhaps scaled up to level 90 as a “revisit” zone, just as  Nek Castle can be revisited at level 50 and 70. These changes would not affect the original zones. Here are some of his responses:

  • Estate of Unrest: “great the way it is”
  • Obelisk of Lost Souls: “not a bad idea”.
  • Rivervale: “does indeed need some love.”
  • Deathfist Citadel: “I think we need to do something “large” with the orcs!”
  • Overland Zones: “I was thinking more dungeon-y dungeon content, but I have seen a lot of requests for something in the overland style areas.”

Another question by Kander, this time about Desert of Flames zones:

Favorite zone from Deserts of Flame? Pick one!

The Maj’dul stuff was very cool, so what was your favorite zone overall would you say?

And yet another question, this time from Kander about AoE encounters:

Large AOE encounters can always be fun! What was your second favorite zone? Group content? Raids?

These questions could simply be an interesting exercise, or the seeds for a revamped dungeon in a future update. If you’ve got a Twitter account, by all means you should submit your comments/opinion to Kander’s twitter.

SmokeJumper has assured players in a thread “Where did my adventure go?!” that not only does EQ2 have a long-term plan besides the standard game updates and expansions, but that much will be revealed soon. If you have taken for granted that next year’s expansion will be Velious Part 2, raising the level cap to 100, you may want to read on!

Watch this space. I’ll be posting stuff soon to describe this year’s slate. Probably next week sometime, maybe the week after. We’re going to be doing some VERY cool stuff this year and I think you’ll start to see more and more of the kinds of things you mention here.

We’re already one of the best. Now it’s time to get unique.

and:

We’ll be posting next year’s slate of coming attractions soon.

Considering the extremely tight leash that Marketing and PR have kept the EQ2 team on in the recent past, it just seems unlikely that all the permissions have been acquired to tell us what’s coming more than a few months out. We’ve never gotten information that far in advance (except Fan Faire), so consider us skeptical.

Players have been posting some great feedback. SmokeJumper took the time to respond to some of it:

“Class distinction is turning to mud.” – Notso

We actually agree with that. We have lots of great ideas about how the classes could be changed to make them a lot more fun to play, but I freely admit that we feel like the players playing currently wouldn’t really care for a shakeup of their classes like that. Maybe it’s something we should have a round robin about at Fan Faire and talk about publicly so we get fan reaction in real time. It’s a gigantic fundamental change for the game because it touches the heart of each and every player that built their character to be the way it is for good reasons. Definitely do-able (although it’s a large job), but we need to hear strong support from players before we’d make a move like this.

Okay. It’s been a while since we talked about this internally. I’ll bring it up with the team soon and discuss. Thanks for the prodding.

“AA is the new level. EQ1 got this way and that is when I left. I wish they would do away with one or the other.” – Notso

This is probably something EQ Next might consider, but removing levels from EQII is an even more fundamnetal change and unlikely to ever occur. Conversely, just using levels instead of AA doesn’t really have the same effect. For example, because only AA were raised in DoV, you never outlevel any of the content. There may come a time when the loot you gain somewhat trivalizes early content, but you never grey-out or green-out previous content. In that way, AA raises are nicely attractive.

Certainly, level 100 beckons to us all, but not yet, and not for a while.

“To max AA’s as soon as possible you need to turn off exp and do every quest you can find while leveling up (ed: thus removing any possible alternate exploration path for any alts thereafter.)” – Notso

Another good point. We’ve talked around this point a lot, but I haven’t heard it phrased exactly that way. I scribbled down a note for discussion. It’s certainly rehashing old ground, but things change. We’ll see. Thanks.

More as we have it…

If you are a level 80+ Master Crafter who has completed the Tradeskill Epic, this post by Domino may interest you:

Epic crafters, you might want to visit the tradeskill society in your home town while Bristlebane Day is with us. The grand jester has been having some fun with red collectibles for the season…

Players immediately noticed that every red shiny was dropping just one item. It seems there’s something else you have to do to get the others.

From Makya:

Here’s my last 10 minutes…

Dreak’s Tin Spike – put in collection

Dreak’s Tin Spike – put in bag for other crafters

Dreak’s Tin Spike – delete one in bag and loot

Dreak’s Tin Spike – delete one in bag and loot

Dreak’s Tin Spike – delete one in bag and loot

give up and go do something else…

Edit: Aha, much more variety in the actual instance.  Funny stuff and good memories running around the zone.

From SmokeJumper on the EQ2 Forums:

We’re making some changes to make dungeons more attractive to players in DoV. We’re adjusting base pop and boss health so that the dungeons take less time to complete so they’re more fun for folks, as well as to allow more frequent chances at boss loot drops on revisits. We’re also making a few changes so that bosses don’t wipe parties so easily since they seem to be a bit tougher than we’d originally planned.

We’re approaching these changes conservatively so that we don’t overshoot the mark. If these changes don’t do the trick, we’ll probably do another round of small changes later. But the overall goal is to make the dungeons more attractive for everyone.

P.S., These are not the only fixes we’re making for tomorrow’s hot fixes, but we wanted to call these changes out specially because those of you that gave up on dungeons because they were too challenging for the payoffs you were getting may want to give it another go now.
