Game Update 62: Age of Discovery

Game Update 61: The War of Zek

I’ve seen a lot of posts on this afternoon by a Twitter account @OccupyNorrath hosting an event on both Antonia Bayle and Butcherblock Friday afternoon 6pm and 8pm est, respectively. It seems they are protesting the high prices of Age of Discovery and the free to play conversion of EverQuest 2. I am wondering if anyone from Antonia Bayle or Butcherblock will come forward to see if this is a real event or a parody of the Occupy Wall St. movement that is happening all over the world. As a member of the Butcherblock server I have heard no mention of this event at all.

What do you think?

If you are in the US and were planning to stock up on and redeem a bunch of StationCash cards this weekend, you might not be aware that the Wal-Mart exclusive StationCash cards, which reward not 1500SC but 2000SC for $15, have been confirmed to triple in value when redeemed during this weekend’s Triple StationCash event.

Between 12:01 AM PDT May 27, 2011 and 11:59 PM PDT May 30, 2011, redeem any SOE Pre-Paid Game Card and get TRIPLE Station Cash for a limited time only!

While any StationCash card can be redeemed for StationCash in EQ2, even cards branded for DCUO or FreeRealms, Krakus of Butcherblock has confirmed that the $15 Wal-Mart StationCash card will yield 6,000SC when redeemed this weekend.

Wooohooo! Wooohooo! Woohoo!

WELCOME BACK TO NORRATH!

Servers Are Up!

(I am online as we speak, Grump @ Butcherblock), but some zones may be unavailable!

SmokeJumper has been providing frequent updates on today’s installation of Multihousing into EQ2:

Hi, folks,

Today’s housing feature has to do a lot of massaging of the house database elements. This takes a considerable amount of time (a bit like a world merge, actually).

This means that when we take servers down, they will be down for 2 or 3 hours while we do that process. We should have all the servers up by mid-afternoon sometime (Pacific time).

The servers that are currently running are Antonia Bayle, Barren Sky, Harla Dar, Guk, Everfrost, Unrest, and Crushbone.

The next batch will be Splitpaw, Butcherblock, Nagafen, Freeport, Permafrost, Oasis, Crushbone, Valor, Storms, Sebilis, The Bazaar and Vox.

So be patient with us a bit. Multiple House Ownership and Prestige Homes will be here today!

As to the question of exactly when the servers will be up (with +hours corrected):

Mid-afternoon sometime (Pacific time)

Add +8 hours in the UK and +9 in Germany to any Pacific Time estimate we give. So mid-afternoon our time is something like midnight or later in Europe.

Update as of 9:00PM GMT+1 (noon PDT):

Crushbone is one of the servers that will come up in the first batch in an hour or two from now.

In response to complaints about taking down the European servers at the same time, especially when today’s Downtime announcement suggested the usual 2am update:

When we do major updates like this, that require database manipulation, we need enough people “on deck” to deal with any issues in real-time that it’s not realistic to have them all come in at 2am.

Regarding complaints about doing a major update when Game Update 60 is coming on May 17th:

That’s part of the reason we’re doing this now. We need to clear the decks so that GU 60 can go onto Test and we can focus on that for the next few weeks.

Regarding the Russian servers:

We try to minimize downtime but in the cases where we have to merge or transfer data for an update, it takes considerable time and we need to watch it carefully in case there are issues.

This will be behind us soon and we shouldn’t have anything like this again for the forseeable future.

and finally…

GU 60 is scheduled to go to Test later today also (after the housing update is done).

In an amusing use of a Station Cash illusion item, clever player Meha turned himself into a treasure chest and planted himself where the normal chest would drop in a public quest raid.  Apparently, the actual chest hadn’t dropped, so they took matters into their own hands to lighten the mood.  Needless to say, player Rabbie from Butcherblock and his guild The Black Knights were laughing at the ensuing chaos:

Everyone ran to him, clicked on him, there was shouting, snickering, and cursing indeed. Then about 5 minutes later, someone else did it, off to the side.  And half the zone thought “Look, it’s over there!” and swarmed to the new chest. And there was more shouting, snickering, and cursing…

Not everyone found it amusing, of course.  But it was all in good fun, according to the Black Knights, anyway.

As other players recalled in the forum thread, this follows the tradition of pranks in the original EverQuest, where illusionists would turn themselves into money on the floor of the bank, or even more wickedly, a trickster who turned himself into a post high in the tree city, mimicking a bridge entrance high above the forest floor, sending players plummeting to their deaths!

If there is any doubt that EQ2 devs are working as hard as they can to resolve the persistent Receiving Zone Info issues affecting Freeport and (to some extent) other servers, know that Zoltaroth and Rothgar put in 16 hours on Tuesday, and I know that Zoltaroth worked again until midnight this morning. Sleep is overrated!

From Rothgar:

The good news is that we’ve found and fixed the source of the crash that both Butcherblock and Permafrost experienced today. This crash fix will go out with tomorrow morning’s hotfix.

and:

To update further, we have a patching coming tomorrow morning with several changes as well as a large amount of additional logging that will help us troubleshoot the issue even further. This is still our top priority and our lack of updates today has only been due to the fact that we’ve been very busy behind the scenes working towards a solution for this problem.

We will update more later in the day tomorrow.

From SmokeJumper:

1) Long zoning times on Freeport : We’re still tracking this down. We thought we had a fix that went into yesterday’s update, but it only did a little bit to improve things. There’s definitely still a problem. We were here very late last night trying to track it down, but we finally had to settle for putting tons of reporting into the code. We’ll be watching those reports today to try to track down the source of the issue…and then kill it dead, dead, dead.

In response to players seeing long delays with Receiving Zone Info, Rothgar continued:

It’s certainly possible and probable that the same issue exists on live servers but for whatever reason, they are not experiencing it to the extent that Freeport is. There have been a few other assorted performance issues in the past couple of days so its always possible a different problem is exhibiting the same symptoms.

I assure you we are just as concerned with the impact that these performance problems are having on potential new players, but honestly I’m more concerned about the impact its having on you guys that have been suffering through it for a couple of weeks.

In response to some serious trolling, Rothgar had this to say:

First and foremost, if you’ve worked in any kind of engineering or development company it wouldn’t be news that 90% of the time can be spent just finding the cause of a problem. Often times the fix is simple and can be done in minutes. So, in my opinion as a software engineer with 15+ years of programming experience, it’s perfectly fine to say that you don’t know what the problem is as long as you have a clear plan to figure it out. (Which we do)

Now myself and Zoltaroth were here when those guys left almost 5 years ago. We’ve both been with EQ2 for almost as long as the game has been live. No one knows the in’s and out’s of this software better than us and if anyone can fix it, we can. We understand that the issue is frustrating and while it seems we should just be able to take down the server, press a button and fix it, sometimes its not that simple. Insulting our intelligence, calling for firings and otherwise taking your anger out on our team isn’t going to help the situation.

This is a tough issue, we will admit that, but we’re making progress. The same code is running on all EQ2 servers yet Freeport is the only one with this problem. You might think it was population, yet we’ve reproduced this problem on the server when only 100 people were logged in. You might think its a database issue, but we’ve also reproduced this problem in situations where the data is 100% cached and the database was never accessed. It’s one of those issues where every theory you have can be disproved by another test. But like I said, we are making progress and we understand where the issue is occuring but need to narrow it down further.

Tomorrow’s hotfix has a few changes as well as additional logging that will help us narrow that down. The best case scenario is that tomorrow’s hotfix solves the problem. The worst case scenario is that we gather more information and get that much closer to a solution.

Again, accept our apologies for the problems that you’re experiencing. We are doing everything we can at this point to solve it in a timely manner.

Unfortunately I cannot answer questions about extending Velious rewards or other types of compensation but I will forward that on to Smokejumper.

EQ2 Live Servers are offline for an extended window for today’s hotfix. an unscheduled downtime. More as we have it.

From Domino on the EQ2 Forums:

The festival is now active on those servers (Butcherblock and Permafrost) and has been for a while, but did start almost a day late.

We will extend the event on the affected servers. The Gorowyn city festival on Butcherblock and Permafrost this month will end at 11:59pm on the 8th [07:59 on the 9th GMT]. (The festival will still end on all other servers at 11:59 on the 7th). Apologies for any inconvenience!
