Wishing you a Merry Christmas Kwanzaa Hanukkah Solstice Festivus etc. and a Happy New Year.

This week, the folks at SOE added the Chillborn Spear (copy in-game link) to the Marketplace.  This is a two-handed spear which may be placed in your primary appearance slot, giving you the appearance of wielding a 2-handed weapon when you could actually be wielding two.  So, I am curious about other weapons which could be used to give the illusion of handing a 2-handed weapon.. swords, staffs, etc.. which someone, who wouldn’t normally be able to use 2h, could (rangers, assassins, etc..)

If you know of any such items, please leave a reply so we can check it out!  Thank you for your help in this search!

There’s no show this week, but make sure to catch up by checking out the Jethal Show Christmas 2010 episode!

Freebloods arrive and bring new accessories with them

If you’ve logged into EverQuest II today, you might have noticed some new blood-sucking neighbors.

The new Freeblood race has a special “Ferocity of the Freeblood”, as well as access to housing “Freeblood Lair” and “Swarm of Bats” mount/buff. The details of how these are unlocked and what issues players will face if they change race have been addressed in different posts over the last 24 hours. Here are the highlights. Also inside, a glimpse of something we have heard rumors about before — that some new feature is coming to EQ2 housing with the release of the Destiny of Velious expansion.

From SmokeJumper’s announcement on the EQ2 Forums:

The Freeblood vampires are now available in the Marketplace!

I’m posting this FAQ about them to hopefully answer as many questions as I can in advance:

They’re found within the Race Packs section of the Marketplace.

You have to purchase the “Unlock: Freeblood” to get the basic Freeblood race unlocked so that you can create Freeblood characters or change an existing character into one with a Race Change Potion.

When you make a Freeblood character, you’ll gain a whole host of new abilities, including things like “Reveal Inner Self”, the ability to reveal the inner demon within to your foes, and a racial passive ability that drains health to repair your own damage while you’re in combat. You also get a set of new unarmed combat animations to let you show your savage side during melee.

Once you create a Freeblood character, there are other options within the Freeblood Race Pack category. These include the Vampire Deed (a Mistmoore house of your own to use as a lair), the Cloud of Bats ability (changes you to a cloud of bats and gives you Slowfall along with mount-like speed…and which, once you unlock flying mounts in Velious, also gives you the ability to fly), and special effects to add to your new unarmed combat animations.

Freeblood accessories are available as an Accessory Pack, and also available a la carte.

When you start your Freeblood character, you’ll be able to personalize appearance, of course…but you can also customize your “Inner Self” illusion (demon face). Do this after initial customization by going to see any Barber NPC in the game. Turn on your Inner Self illusion, and then purchase a “Shave and a Cut” item from that Barber. As long as you’re in demon form when you do this, you’ll be able to customize your inner self’s appearance this way.

And lastly, a quick word about the Winter Promotions campaign. The February reward grants all qualified participants the “Unlock: Freeblood” ability.

I’ll check this thread sporadically during the break and answer any questions that come up. Enjoy!

and other followup posts in that and other threads:

Vampire accessory items can only be seen on the marketplace by a character that is currently a Freeblood vampire. They’re also NO-TRADE.

The Vampire Lair is only available to Freeblood Vampires.

How do you customize the Inner Self appearance of your newly purchased Freeblood vampire? SmokeJumper has an announcement on that:

Just a quick post to let folks know that you *can* customize the “Inner Self” appearance on a Freeblood Vampire.

Here’s how:

  • Go to see any Barber NPC in the game.
  • Turn on your Inner Self illusion.
  • Then purchase a “Shave and a Cut” item from that Barber.

As long as you’re in Inner Self form when you do this, you’ll be able to customize its appearance this way.

on the subject of changing race afterwards:

Yyou would be able to keep the lair. However, the attacks are specific to the Freeblood form and thus can’t be used while you’re not Freeblood, and the Cloud of Bats ability can only be used by a vampire. So they would be unavailable until you change back to the Freeblood race (although you would *not* have to purchase them again).

and whether the Lair, Swarm of Bats, and Ferocity of the Freeblood accessories are per-account or per-character:

Aaccessory items are “per character”. So each would need to buy their own.

What about players with both EQ2 and EQ2X accounts?

Unlocking the Freeblood race on one service *does* unlock it for the same account on the other EQII service also.

and:

Freeblood are part of a marketplace-only category of Prestige Races…we just have no current plans for when/if we’ll ever roll out another Prestige Race or not. They’re not included in the Platinum (EQ2X) purchase and we’ll make that clear on the matrix in the near future.

As to why Freeblood are not available in a SOGA version:

There’s only the one set for Freeblood, like other specialty races that only have one model set.

On whether we might some day be able to try out the Freeblood race on the character customization screen prior to buying it, Rothgar had this to say:

Not a bad idea. We can look into making this change.

We’ve noticed that the Freeblood Lair is quite a bit smaller than the Mistmoore Crag Estate which was the 7 year anniversary reward.  SmokeJumper tantalized with this post in response:

You will see that the house is a really cool thing when a feature due in January rolls out. I can’t unveil that exact feature at the moment, but I think it’ll make you look at this house differently when it does.

Here are some news items we missed in the flurry of Server Merge and Freeblood news. They include Shaders 3 and Halas buildings, the look of the Freeblood, and Loitering NPCs in Freeport and Qeynos.

Haohmaru has checked in some fixes to Shaders specifically in New Halas.

With todays push, Halas should be looking better.

Since we’re still unable to produce the issue internally, can y’all let me know if the issue is still visible, and if so, where? Screenshots would greatly help.

What we were able to ‘fix’ would be the buildings/objects in Halas.

Haohmaru confirmed issues with Heritage Gnome Armor and other armor sets and stated that fixes are incoming for those as well.

Meanwhile, Dave “covic” has commented extensively on the appearance of the Freeblood race including commenting on a screen shot posted by a player.

The male I posted is the evil illusion form, that is where the nails come from. Both male and female come with the nails when you go evil bad a… I was thinking that they need a way to take down 30 foot giants when laying the smack down. So the nails are big but only in the evil form.

He has nipples just cant see them in that pose because he is hunching over so much in the animation. Its one of the combat idles the freebloods do when getting ready to pounce their prey.

He does have a more tear dropped big jaw in your screen and that is about as wide as you can go in customisation. Those lips are at the extreme lemony look also. Once you get past the character select and to the customisation screen you will see that you can really bring that jaw in and push those lips out. What you are seeing at the race selection is a random creation that can be very extreme.

Tim our lead environment artist also mentioned how the character looks like a darkelf with that big jaw awhile back. So we could have limited the amount of customisation, to create characters to only our liking, but I know our players like more freedom to create who they want. So although we tried to keep the base line character the way we wanted, we set the customisation sliders just past our own personnal preference.

For the base skin tone it is very pale and I put in some slight green, blue, and purple in the tint wheel. With these colors you can get a more dead look, and with the purple the freeblood can get close to a darkelf skin color but not all the way.

For almost a year now, many of the NPCs in Freeport and Qeynos have been loitering or congregating all in one location. We might see some movement on this issue. From Gninja:

We are aware of the gaggle of NPCs in Qeynos and Freeport. Unfortunately its not something easily fixed but it is definately on our radar. We hope to get to it as soon as humanly possible.

There are certain conditions that cause them to get stuck and it happens more on more populated servers.

So with today’s official introduction of the Freeblood vampire race to EverQuest 2 as the first Premium race, the remaining secrets have been unveiled. Chief among them is that the Swarm of Bats premium mount/ability available exclusively to Freebloods will, when Destiny of Velious expansion launches and a quest has been completed, be usable as a full-fledged Flying Mount. From the official announcement:

Characters who go on to unlock flying mounts in the Destiny of Velious expansion will also be able to use this ability to fly.

In addition to the Mortal Lifetap and other abilities available exclusively to the Freeblood race, this will likely put them at a distinct advantage over existing races in EQ2. If you thought that Fae and Arasai would also gain the natural ability of flight, you’d be mistaken. Back in October, when queried on the subject, Tom Tobey posted:

I have done  exhaustive Fae research and have found that Fae wings are more adapted for hovering.

“…True hovering, which is generating lift through flapping alone rather than as a product of the fae’s passage through the air, demands a lot of energy….”

Thus for Fae to fly for long distance and at high altitude they will require the assistance of a flying mount.

Now keep in mind that this was 2 months ago. Most EQ2 devs were just as surprised as the rest of us by the news that vampires were being added as a playable race when they were notified a few weeks ago.

But when asked about Fae and Arasai being able to fly unaided, Rothgar posted this just a few minutes ago:

We don’t have any plans to make flying an innate ability for any race. All races will be able to fly with the use of a flying mount. The FreeBlood just have access to a special “mount” that makes them look like a swarm of bats. Keep in mind that this is not an innate ability for FreeBlood either.

Comments? So what are your thoughts? Should Fae and Arasai be able to fly without the aid of the Velious quested flying mount (probably a dragon)?
